Artistic Expressions of Grief
Grief can be difficult to explain in words. Art can give shape to experiences that feel too complex, painful, or personal to express in other ways.
This class explores the many ways people use creative expression to navigate loss, honor memory, and connect with others. Through examples ranging from dance and literature to tattoos and public memorials, you will consider how art can reflect grief following a death as well as other significant life changes.
Together, we will explore how symbolic, abstract, and realistic representations can give voice to experiences that may otherwise remain unspoken. We will also consider how grief-related art can challenge social expectations, educate others, validate shared experiences, and create opportunities for resilience, activism, and community connection.
By examining the relationship between creativity and grief, you will gain a broader understanding of how art helps us make meaning of life, loss, memory, and our place in the world.
