The Changing Deathscape: Death and Grief in the Digital Age

As technology reshapes how we live, it also transforms how we grieve, remember, and honor those we have lost. This class explores the evolving landscape of death and grief in the digital age, examining how online memorials, virtual support groups, and emerging technologies are redefining mourning practices across cultures.

Students will:

Engage with contemporary practices such as online support forums, digital memorials, and virtual rituals.
Reflect on ethical questions around privacy, misinformation, inclusivity, and psychological safety in digital spaces.
Analyze cultural shifts in how communities adapt rituals of remembrance to technological platforms.
Consider practical applications for caregivers, educators, and professionals supporting individuals through grief.
By the end of the class, participants will gain both theoretical insight and practical tools for navigating the changing deathscape with empathy, equity, and critical awareness.

The class session is 1.5 hours, with time allotted for open discussion.

All class proceeds directly support the Center for Death Education’s mission.
