1 Part Class

Funeral Traditions and Final Resting Choices

Across cultures, people honor loved ones in many ways, weaving together rituals, symbols, and practices that reflect both personal and communal values. Funerals and methods of body disposition are not only practical decisions but also deeply meaningful acts that express identity, belief systems, and cultural traditions. This class introduces the wide range of practices—from traditional burials and cremations to newer ecological options such as green burials and water cremation—that continue to evolve in response to social change, environmental awareness, and technological innovation.

You will explore how these choices embody respect for the deceased, provide comfort for the living, and shape the ways communities remember and say goodbye. Attention is given to the diversity of traditions, the ethical questions surrounding sustainability and accessibility, and the ways in which families navigate both long-standing customs and emerging alternatives. By examining these practices, we gain insight into how societies balance continuity and change, honoring the past while adapting to the needs of the present.

All class proceeds directly support the Center for Death Education’s mission.
